Few moments in an athlete’s life compare to standing on the Paralympic podium, medal in hand, after years of dedication and perseverance. For Mari Arkhurst, winning bronze in Para Dressage at Paris 2024 was more than just a victory, it was the realization of a dream 12 years in the making.
In this exclusive interview, Mari reflects on her Paralympic debut, the special bond with her horse Athene Lindebjerg, the obstacles she faced on the road to Paris, and what’s next in her incredible journey.
"Looking back on your Paralympic debut, how does it feel now to officially call yourself a Medalist?"
Mari: “Amazing, a dream come true.”
"What was the most memorable moment for you during Paris, both in competition and outside of it?"
Mari: “Going into the arena for my first test, with the Palace of Versailles glittering in the background and being able to wave at the crowds at the end. It was so emotional to experience that atmosphere and to know I was now a Paralympian, and no one could ever take that away.”
Outside the competition, another highlight was celebrating with family at Paralympics GB House:
Mari: “Being able to visit the Paralympics GB House with my close family and to take part in the Medalist celebration by ringing and signing the golden bell.”
"Athene Lindebjerg played a key role in your success. How has your bond with her grown through this journey, and what makes her such a special partner?"
Mari: “Athene is the most incredible partner as she loves dancing, and the bigger the stage, the more she gives. She has an amazing walk, and as our partnership has grown, she has become more aware of my aids in terms of what I use to make her go forward, which isn’t my legs. She is ‘The Duchess,’ and riding her just brings a smile to my face.”
"What challenges did you face leading up to the Games, and how did you overcome them to stand on the podium?"
Mari: “Overcoming sepsis and being very unwell in March 2024 and getting back in the saddle with my incredible team around me as quickly as I could. We were on an upward trajectory which we had to maintain through the season, which was challenging together with the number of shows we had to attend, as this meant less time training at home and no time to do lots of test-riding practice.”
"How has winning bronze changed your life, both as an athlete and as a person?"
Mari: “It’s been a life-changing event and something that is so surreal but incredible. My profile has been raised; I’ve had lots of requests for public speaking engagements. I’ve been invited to some incredible events and met some amazing people. I have had some lovely messages, and it’s really started to sink in what an inspiration I am to so many people. For me as a person, I feel a new sense of belonging and am incredibly proud of what I’ve achieved.”
"What advice would you give to young or aspiring Para Dressage riders who see your journey as an inspiration?"
Mari: “I would say take every opportunity you are given and follow your dreams. Sometimes stepping out of our comfort zone can be scary, but it’s worth it.”
"Beyond competition, you’re also a mentor for up-and-coming riders, how do you hope to inspire the next generation of athletes?"
Mari: “I want to show that anything is possible and if you have a dream, follow it; it may take years, but you will achieve it if you keep believing. I had a dream; it’s taken 12 years, but I am now a Paralympian.”
"What role has your support network, family, friends, sponsors, and trainers, played in your success, and how do you celebrate this victory with them?"
Mari: “They have all played a huge role in my success, and I couldn’t have achieved what I have done without everybody; this medal is for all my support network.”
“When we found out I was going to Paris, we had a wonderful celebration dinner with Athene’s owner, Di, Romily (who looks after Athene), my trainer and his partner, and my mum and dad.”
"What’s next for you and Athene?"
Mari: “We are campaigning for this year’s Para Dressage European Championships, and we start our campaign in March. I am super excited to get back in the white boards with her.”
Final Thoughts
Mari’s story of resilience, passion, and triumph is one that will inspire generations to come. From battling setbacks to winning bronze at the Paralympics, she has shown what is possible when you refuse to give up.
As she prepares for the next challenge, one thing is certain: Mari’s journey is far from over, and we can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next.
