Mari Durward-Akhurst Absolutely Shines at the Paralympics
And we couldn’t be prouder!
The Paralympics wrapped up recently in Paris - and what a ride it was - literally and figuratively!
Competitor Mari Durward-Akhurst, riding Athene Lindebjerg, claimed the bronze medal in the Grade I freestyle competition. As her sponsors and longtime supporters - we are over the moon for her!
This victory wasn’t just a testament to her skill but a realization of a lifelong dream.
For Mari, riding has been much more than just a sport—it has been a transformative force, one that helped her overcome the challenges of living with cerebral palsy and a rare neurological condition.
Her story is one of resilience, determination, and the incredible bond between horse and rider.
Mari's Early Journey
Mari’s journey with horses began in 2005 when she started riding with her local Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA).
For Mari, riding initially served as a form of physical therapy. Having struggled to keep up with her peers due to her disability, riding gave her something to excel at—a source of both physical and emotional strength.
Her coordination, balance, and muscle tone all improved as she formed connections with the horses she rode.
What began as therapy soon evolved into a passion, and before long, Mari found herself immersed in the competitive world of Para Dressage.
The Road to Competitive Para Dressage
In 2007, Mari made her debut on the British team at the Junior International level. From there, her career took off, and she achieved numerous national and international titles.
Her determination and love for the sport pushed her to excel despite the obstacles in her path - which so many equestrians can identify with.
By 2019, she was competing in the prestigious FEI Para Dressage European Championship, helping the British team secure silver.
Mari’s successes on the international stage solidified her place among the top para dressage riders in the world.
The Paralympics: A Lifelong Dream Realized
The Paris Paralympics marked Mari's Paralympic debut, and she seized the opportunity with both hands.
Riding Athene Lindebjerg, an absolutely perfect mare with a history of gold medal performances, Mari performed an unforgettable routine to the soundtracks of Pirates of the Caribbean and Pearl Harbour.
Their 77.75% score in the freestyle competition secured them the bronze medal, a downright incredible achievement!
Mari reflected on the moment with joy, saying, “It’s incredible to finally be able to say I’m a Paralympian. It’s been a lifelong dream, and I think it’s starting to sink in now.”
Partnership with Athene Lindebjerg
We can’t talk about Mari and leave out her stunner of a horse. We all know the bond between rider and horse is crucial - and Para Dressage is not an exception to that rule.
Mari and Athene have this whole team thing down to a science. Athene had already proven her abilities with other riders, but together with Mari, they formed a unique connection that set them apart in competition.
Mari’s confidence in Athene was evident during their routine: “I put her into position and she said, ‘I’ve got this.’” This partnership, formed in early 2023, has never seen them finish off the podium, a testament to the strength of their connection and the hard work they’ve both put into reaching this level.
The Many Roles Horses Play
The Paralympics offer a platform for athletes with disabilities to showcase their talents on the world stage, breaking down barriers and changing perceptions.
For athletes like Mari, the games are an opportunity to prove that disability does not limit excellence.
It’s a celebration of human - and in this case equine - potential, perseverance, and the importance of inclusivity in sports.
The Paralympics allow riders like Mari to fulfill their dreams and inspire others who may also be living with disabilities.
Horses have a unique way of connecting with people, and for individuals with disabilities, the benefits are profound.
Riding can improve physical capabilities, such as strength, coordination, and balance, as it has for Mari.
But beyond the physical, horses offer something even more valuable—emotional and mental well-being.
The bond formed between horse and rider can build confidence, foster independence, and provide a sense of achievement that transcends any physical limitations.
Mari’s journey from using riding as therapy to standing on a Paralympic podium is proof of the power horses have to change lives.
